New research article on ecosystem accounting for Posidonia oceanica

New MARBEFES study by Bartolini et al. presents the first ecosystem accounts for Marine-Based Tourism (MBT) in Italy, offering a comprehensive analysis of the link between marine ecosystems and the tourism sector. Using the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting framework, the authors assess the extent and condition of key marine habitats like Posidonia oceanica, a crucial seagrass species, and quantify its contribution to coastal tourism.


Posidonia oceanica significantly supports MBT, generating exchange values of €6 million in 2019 and €3.7 million in 2021. This research emphasises the need for improved data collection, organisation, and monitoring of marine ecosystems to enhance sustainable tourism practices.
