Joint event MARBEFES & BIOcean5D - BioBlitz

In less than a month we will have a big event together with BIOcean5D within Sopot Science Day entitled “Ocean of Changes” 2023! 

The aim of the MARBEFES & BIOcean5D BioBlitz is to gather as many biologists as possible for the identification of as many species as possibles and in 24 hours in the seaside city park and coastal waters. From microbes and rotifers to fish and bats. Friday 16th is devoted to collections and observations, while Saturday 17th is the public event in the form of a scientific picnic.

For the purposes of our research, we have chosen an area related to our everyday scientific interests - an area known and liked by our scientists and all nearby scientific units: the vicinity of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot. The designated area is the area represented by the map in the picture below, known by local residents as the North Park, set from the Sveliny stream to Kusociński Square.

There is no one in the world who can independently identify the species of miniature and large organisms living around us. Our action shows how many different specialists, how many different methods need to be used to understand what biodiversity is. During the 24-hour determination of organisms from the designated area, the following will participate:

National Marine Fisheries Research Institute - microplankton
Faculty of Geography and Oceanography, University of Gdańsk - fish
Faculty of Biology, University of Gdańsk - birds, mammals and terrestrial botany
Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań - terrestrial invertebrates, microfauna
University of Lodz - freshwater invertebrates
Gdańsk University of Technology - bacteria
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg - molecular methods

On June 17, on the grounds of the Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., it will be possible to publicly watch scientists indicating organisms under a large dedicated tent.

At the same time and location  the scientific picnic will take place, where various institutions will present their scientific activities and more. In addition, interesting lectures and film screenings will be held in the Institute’s seminar room, and we prepare games, competitions and workshops for the youngest.
