MARBEFES 2nd GA 2023 Lithuania

CSERGE at 2nd MARBEFES general assembly

Our CSERGE members (Tiziana Luisetti, Carlo Fezzi and Valentina Di Gennaro) attended the 2nd general assembly of the MARBEFES project held in the coastal city of Klaipeda, Lithuania at the end of August 2023.

The meeting was held over three days and involved partners from across Europe (Poland, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Netherlands, Romania, Spain and the UK).

The inspiring discussion and talks highlighted results of stakeholder surveys, ecological and biogeochemical modelling approaches to be used to develop valuation tools, and the methods and requirements for economic, ecological and cultural valuation.

In particular, our members presented the Marine Natural Capital Accounting and economic valuation methods guidelines produced for the project to colleagues with different background.

Important outputs from the meeting were more detailed workplans for the coming year, including strengthening the links between work packages and other Horizon projects, and continuation of the engagement with stakeholders to identify the key ecological/economic issues they face.

The programme also included an excursion to the Curonian Spit and lagoon. The Spit, bordering with Russia, hosts Europe’s highest drifting sand dunes and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
